Uganda / Kenya (Country threat levels – 4 / 4): Three unidentified suspects attempted to board a passenger bus in central Nairobi with explosives in their luggage at approximately 1900 local time (1600 UTC) on 20 December 2010. The suspects reportedly attempted to force their way onto the bus without submitting one of their bags to a security check, prompting a dispute with baggage officials. During the dispute the bag fell to the ground, and an explosion went off, killing one of the suspects, a baggage handler and a woman nearby; more than 40 others were injured. Police officials initially reported that the explosives were grenades, but this has not been confirmed. The bus was headed to Uganda, leading police officials to suspect that it may have been a terrorist attack, as al-Shabab has threatened to attack Uganda over its support for the Somali government. Security forces have also warned that al-Qaeda-linked militants were planning to carry out attacks in East Africa during the holiday season. The Allied Democratic Forces (AFD), a Ugandan group, is also a suspect in the attack, which comes amid the busy holiday travel season between the East Africa neighbors. Police officials are on high alert in both Kampala and Nairobi in the aftermath of the attack. [wpdm_package id=’230′]
